Art students bring color to Lansford

Art students from the Panther Valley and beyond brought some color to storefronts in Lansford Friday.

In what has become an annual tradition, local students painted windows in a Christmas theme.

Students in the art club at Panther Valley Junior-Senior High School, and Michele Klock’s class at Carbon Career and Technical Institute painted a total of 66 windows at 34 businesses.

For the last three years, Lansford Alive has recruited local businesses to see if they would like their windows painted.

And each year, the number of businesses in the borough grows.

“You wouldn’t believe the feedback we get from all the people in the Panther Valley area,” said Mary Soto of Lansford Alive.

Panther Valley art club adviser Kim Burkett said that the students are welcomed by the town. Lansford Alive provides lunch and supplies.

They stage in the parking lot of Marco’s Pizza. And other businesses gave them hats and snacks as they worked outside.

“It’s nice to bring the town and the kids together. The townspeople are so welcoming,” Burkett said.

The students come up with all kinds of designs. Some students were trying to create a gift box that appeared to pop off the window.

Alyssa Schultz and Jonathan Reynolds painted minimalist white tree branches at the Wine and Spirits store.

“A lot of people when they walk by say it’s brightening up our town, and they’re glad the kids are showing an interest,” Schultz said.

Not far away, Sophie Smith recreated a dramatic winter landscape. She started with a picture in mind on her phone, but technology tends to be unpredictable.

“My phone died, so I’ve been free-handing a bunch of this,” she said.

While they each had their own ideas, when their 1 p.m. deadline approached, the students helped each other to make sure the murals were finished in time.

“They’re teaming up, they’re working together. It’s not just them painting one window each,” Burkett said.
