Trees ready for celebration in Palmerton park
The trees are trimmed, the wreaths are hung and Santa is on his way to Palmerton’s Christmas in the Park this Saturday.
This year’s celebration will include more than 100 trees decorated by local businesses, organizations and families, along with plenty of activities to put you in the holiday spirit.
“It goes from noon to 5 p.m.,” event chairwoman Michele O’Neill said. “We’ll have opening ceremonies with the veterans and the color guard. We also have the bell choir from Holy Trinity Church, and other entertainment throughout the afternoon, including a strolling brass quartet and Victorian singers.”
If you’re bringing the little ones along, plan to arrive early and catch Santa coming to town on a horse-drawn carriage. He’ll be in the bandshell until 3 p.m., but visitors must be in line by 2:30. As a little bonus, any child that sees Santa will be entered to win a special prize.
“We have bikes, wagons, pool passes, a whole bunch of stuff,” O’Neill said.
Speaking of carriage rides, you can enjoy your own little voyage around town after Santa turns the reins over. Take a turn around the neighborhood and a trip back in time to check out all of the holiday spirit throughout the borough.
If you need a little something to chase away the winter chills, there will be plenty of warm, tasty sweets and savory treats to sate your stomach.
“We have a bake sale, we have apple dumplings, mac and cheese, gourmet hot chocolate from the Girl Scouts, and all kinds of warm, yummy stuff,” O’Neill said.
Numerous craft vendors will be in the park as well, with lots of unique handmade gifts that are sure to please just about anyone on your list.
Christian Action Council of Palmerton Area Churches will elevate the holiday energy with an old-fashioned sing-along at 4 p.m., setting the stage for the tree lighting at 4:30.
“They do a wonderful job. I feel like it’s the epitome of Christmas in the Park. It’s the whole community coming together and singing,” O’Neill said.
Keeping with the benevolent nature of the holiday, gift donations for Toys for Tots will be accepted, along with contributions of nonperishable foods for CACPAC.
O’Neill can’t wait to kick off the seasonal spectacle, which she hopes will be graced by some festive flurries to make for a perfect holiday celebration.
“Once the trees are up, they’ll be up until New Year’s, and they’ll be lit every night,” O’Neill said. “It’s gorgeous, and I hope that, if not this weekend, then one weekend we might get a light dusting of snow.”
