Carbon County court — assault cases

A Berks County man admitted in Carbon County court on Tuesday to assaulting his then girlfriend.

He was one of four defendants in pending assault-related cases to enter a guilty plea before Judge Joseph J. Matika.

Mahoning incident

Jonathan D. Steward

, 33, of Lenhartsville, pleaded to one count each of simple assault and resisting arrest for an incident on July 24 in Mahoning Township.

Township police responded to a reported domestic incident and found a female suffering from bruises and related injuries. She told officers that Steward, her then boyfriend, had struck her numerous times in the face. She received medical treatment for her injuries.

When police attempted to take him into custody, he struggled with the officers. The police report indicated it took substantial force to get him in custody.

The victim was at the plea hearing and told Matika that the assault incident was “not a one-time thing.” She claimed Steward had assaulted her on other occasions.

Steward said he has had no contact with the victim since the day of the incident.

Matika placed him on probation for two years and ordered him to get a mental health evaluation and follow any recommendations for treatment, attend and successfully complete an anger management course, render 100 hours of community service and have no contact with the victim.

Other pleas

Crystal R. Whildin

, 36, of Lansford, pleaded to one count of simple assault. She was arrested on May 25 by Lansford police for an incident in which she assaulted her then boyfriend with a screwdriver.

Matika placed her on probation for a year and ordered her to render 50 hours of community service and have no contact with the victim.

Talon Wesley Lewis

, 19, of Summit Hill, pleaded to one count of simple assault. He was arrested on Oct. 7 by Summit Hill police following a domestic incident in which he assaulted the boyfriend of his girlfriend’s mother. He admitted punching the victim in the face several times.

Sentencing was deferred because the commonwealth must obtain a restitution figure for medical services provided to the victim.

Jeremiah Herberger

, 34, of Lansford, pleaded to one count of simple assault. He was arrested on July 10 by Lansford police for an incident along Patterson Street. Police said they responded to a domestic incident and learned that Herberger assaulted his wife, who required medical attention at St. Luke’s Miners Campus in Coaldale.

Matika deferred sentencing as a restitution figure for medical services provided must be determined.

Those sentenced must also pay court costs of about $1,000 and a $50 per month supervision fee while on probation or parole.
