Interstate 81 in Schuylkill County was closed down for several hours overnight due to “numerous weather related traffic incidents,” state police at Frackville said.
Troopers reported both northbound and southbound lanes were shutdown at 12:13 a.m. between Exit 141 (Hazleton Beltway) and Exit 131 (Mahanoy City/Hometown).
The northbound lanes reopened at 4:47 a.m. and the southbound lanes at 5:24 p.m.
A crash occurred at 12:25 a.m. southbound in Delano Township as Subrmaminam Balachandran, 55, of Ontario, Canada, was operating a 2015 Freightliner tractor with trailer when he swerved to avoid a vehicle whose driver had lost control due to ice and snow on the road.
The rig overturned into the median. Balachandran was not injured, but damages were disabling to the tractor.
Troopers said a second crash occurred at 12:36 a.m. southbound in Delano Township. Keemer T. Becks, 43, of Fayetteville, Georgia, was driving a 2011 Freightliner truck-tractor with trailer when he lost control due to extreme icy conditions.
The rig rolled over onto its left side as Becks attempted to avoid a crash with another vehicle. The rig came to rest in the median with the trailer portion blocking the left lane. Becks was not injured.
