Trinity Thrift Store hosts annual Christmas sale

The Trinity Thrift Store in Lehighton will hold its 10th annual Christmas sale this Friday, Saturday, Monday and Tuesday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Proceeds benefit the Trinity Food Pantry, which serves needy families in the Lehighton Area School District.

The sale will be held at Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church’s Luther Hall on Third and Iron streets.

This year’s sale will feature indoor and outdoor decorations, ornaments and lights, jewelry, knickknacks, toys, candles, angels, clothing and household items.

A variety of small appliances, artificial trees and wreaths are also available for purchase.

“We have a lot of nice things that could be used as gifts,” said Trinity’s Thrift Store manager Kay Patterson, who noted that many items for sale are new, along with some gently used items.

When the store held its first Christmas sale 10 years ago, it earned roughly $600 and organizers were thrilled, said Patterson.

Proceeds from the sale have grown each year and now amount to a significant portion of the annual donation to the food pantry. In 2016, the four-day Christmas sale raised $3,700 of the total $45,500 in sales for the entire year.

“Our store is too small to display our Christmas items, and we have so much of it,” she said, noting that the sale takes up the entire Luther Hall and stage area.

“It solves our space problems, and it gives the public a chance to find some low-priced things for Christmas.”

Because the Thrift Store relies entirely on donations, the selection varies greatly by year based on what has been donated.

In addition to normal holiday offerings, some of the more eclectic items available this year include new and gently used soccer shoes in a variety of sizes.

“It’s always fun to see what’s available,” she added. “People can save some money, and it helps a very worthy cause.”

Because the sale features donated items and is organized and run entirely by volunteers, every dollar spent at the Thrift Store’s Christmas sale and main store on Third Street directly benefits the Trinity pantry.

The Trinity Food Pantry currently serves more than 1,000 men, women and children in the Lehighton Area School District.

While the dynamics of those seeking help have changed — the pantry is seeing requests from more multigenerational households, and offering food for grandparents down to grandchildren alike — the number of people receiving food help has remained consistently high for several years.

“There continues to be a definite need for the pantry,” said Patterson, who noted that the number of families and individuals requesting food assistance has grown over the past decade.

One new feature returning to the sale from last year is a “thank you” gift to shoppers. The Thrift Store will again offer a personal gift for every shopper who spends $25 at their Christmas sale.

This gift includes women’s beauty product samples.

The Trinity Thrift Store is located at Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church in Lehighton, 175 S. Third St.

The main Thrift Store will be open normal hours during the sale: Tuesday from 9 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.; and Wednesday and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
