The borough of Walnutport will receive energy-saving LED bulb replacements in all of the streetlights.

According to Mayor Wayne Weidner, 60 to 70 bulbs will be changed over to LEDs through grant funding during a two-week window.

Along with the new bulbs, the streets will soon be decorated for the winter season with snowflake lights and holiday flags.

Walnutport’s Recreation Board will host its first-ever tree lighting ceremony on Dec. 2.

A new “Adopt a Tree,” program has been implemented by the borough’s recreation board. Residents and business owners can adopt a tree and decorate it for the holiday season.

The trees will be located at the Recreation Center at 215 Lincoln Ave.

The day will begin at 3 p.m., with the recreation board being joined by Santa, who will assist in the 5 p.m. tree lighting.

Funds raised from the event will be used for future borough projects. Anyone wishing to volunteer for the day’s preparation, donate funds or refreshments should contact the borough office at 610-767-1322, ext. 101, or council board member Jenifer Wentz at 484-273-2278.

Trees need to be decorated by Dec. 1.

Trails

Donald Eckhart of the Walnutport Canal Association briefed the board on the proposed Northern Tier Trail connection after attending a meeting last month.

“The idea is, we are seeing smaller trails develop all over so they are looking at getting them connected. By connecting the dots people can start planning overnight stays and trips,” he said.

“It starts in Portland, and comes down to the Lehigh River,” he said.

Along with connecting the smaller trails, signs and trail amenities maps will be developed.

“They want to stress the importance of groups and communities being on board,” said canal association vice president and historian Marilyn Kaul.
