The Tamaqua Area Drama Club will be presenting “Radium Girls” at 7 p.m. Nov. 17 and at 1 and 7 p.m. Nov. 18 at the Tamaqua Area School District Auditorium.
The play was inspired by a true story. U.S. Radium Corporation employed girls to paint the faces on watches, clocks and dials with a luminous paint the company had developed. The girls became ill and some died. The play traces the story of dial painter Grace Fryer, as she fights for her day in court. Her chief adversary is the president of the U.S. Radium Corporation, Arthur Roeder.
The play tells the story of real-life heroines who spoke out against a corporation that was trying to suppress their story. Because of these women, workplace safety laws and regulations were passed. Their story highlights the importance of speaking out against injustice, even when it comes with great personal cost.
