2017 election: Schuylkill election

Republican Timothy M. Houser easily won a contested race for a six-year term for supervisor in West Penn Township on Tuesday in Schuylkill County voting.

Following are the election results for area municipalities and townships.

West Penn

Houser defeated Democrat Lawrence J. Stival by a vote of 635 votes to 220. It was the only contested race in the township.

Other results had Republican Helene V. Zeigler getting 829 votes for tax collector.

Judge of election results were: first judge nonpartisan Alan R. Parker 234 votes; first inspector no candidate; second judge Republican Susan K. Hunsicker 208; second inspector Republican Charlene M. Miller 161 and Democrat Warren W. Steigerwalt 63; third judge Republican Gloria A. Faust 234; third inspector Republican Ruth Ann Wehr 207 and Democrat Diane L. Fritz 54; auditor (four years) no candidate; and auditor (six years) no candidate.

Coaldale

In Coaldale there were three seats on borough council up for election with four candidates.

The top three finishers were Anne Girard, who had both nominations, 281; Democrats Francis Hutta, 226; and Angela Krapf, 201. Fourth-place finisher was Republican Joel Johnson with 173.

Herb Whildin had both nominations for mayor and got 335 votes. Democrat Catherine M. Papesh was the lone candidate for tax collector and got 305 votes.

Democrat Cynthia B. Freyman got 141 votes for inspector in the west precinct. There were judge and inspector in the east and a judge in the west open with no candidates.

Tamaqua

There were no races in Tamaqua.

The borough will have a new mayor, and the youngest ever, as Nathan J. Gerace, 19, who won both nominations in the spring, got 711 votes Tuesday. There was a write-in candidate, but that effort failed as there were only 202 recorded write-in votes cast Tuesday.

For borough council, three seats, four-year terms, top vote-getter was Republican Ritchie A. Linkhorst, who got 750 votes. He was followed by David E. Mace, who had both nominations, with 703 votes, and Democrat James E. Hull had 468. There were just 38 write-in votes, which won’t change the final results.

Incumbent tax collector Pamela J. McCullion, who had both nominations, got 941 votes.

In other voting: first judge of election Democrat Grace Sakusky got 166; first inspector Republican Kathleen Keefer, 124, and Democrat Dian L. Fudge, 93; second judge, no candidate; second inspector, no candidate; third judge Republican Linda Yulanavage, 279; third inspector Republican Eileen L. Barron, 187, and Democrat John Malarkey, 125; fourth judge, no candidate; fourth inspector, no candidate; auditor (six years) Republican Richard Hadesty Jr., 854.

Rush Township

No races in Rush Township.

The vote totals: Incumbent Republican supervisor Jeannie Montroni, 558, six-year term; Michelle Kabilko, both nominations, tax collector, 678; east judge of election Republican Amy Werner, 276; east inspector Republican Ronald T. Werner, 277; west judge Republican Catherine Klingaman, 250; west inspector, no candidate. In the Elixir Precinct there were no candidates for judge or inspector and no candidates for auditor, two-, four- or six-year terms.

Walker Township

No race in Walker.

The vote totals: supervisor, two years, Christine M. Troxell, both nominations, 205; supervisor, six years, Republican Craig P. Wagner, 188; tax collector Republican Diane Yvonne Malay, 207; judge of election, Republican Susanne Heisler, 201; inspector Republican Judith Moyer, 158; and Democrat Andreas J. Kurtz, 58.

Schuylkill Township

No races in Schuylkill Township.

Voting results: supervisor, six years, Charles A. Hosler, both nominations, 206; tax collector Republican Paul Delpais, 218; judge of election Republican Debra Balliet, 195; inspector Republican Elizabeth Matalavage, 171, and Democrat Gloria Yesavage, 75; auditor, two years, Christine Verdier, both nominations, 201; auditor, four years, Republican Rich Magnani, 188; auditor, six years, Republican Suzanne Apanavage, 139, and Democrat Agnes Kane, 104.

New Ringgold

No races in New Ringgold.

The vote totals: mayor John Belsak, both nominations, 34; council, four years, two to be elected, Republican Jason Gradwell, 37, and Democrat Roger Freed, 32; tax collector Republican Corriann Myers, 37; judge of election Democrat Donna Messner, 36; and inspector Democrat Mildred Boyer, 36.

Mahanoy City

There will be a new mayor in 2018 in Mahanoy City. There was also a race for a seat on borough council.

Republican Dennis Wiessner defeated Democratic Mayor Patricia Schnitzius by 454 to 330. Schnitzius was appointed mayor last year to fill an unexpired term.

In a race for council, four-year term, with three to be elected, the top three finishers were Democrat Thomas C. McCabe with 527 votes followed by Scott Kline and Thom Maziekas, with 498 and 475 respectively. Kline and Maziekas had both nominations. Odd man out is Republican Louis Huber, who got 323 votes. Two-year council seat Patricia Mullins, both nominations, got 601.

Democrat Teckla A. McCabe, unopposed, 610 votes for tax collector.

Others: first judge of election, Democrat Nancy A. Burke, 71; first inspector Democrat Regina Olson-Lash, 65; second judge Democrat Geralyn Klitsch, 224; second inspector Republican Joan McFarland, 144, and Democrat Charlene Bolinsky, 106; third and fourth judge and inspectors, no candidates.

McAdoo

McAdoo will have a new mayor as incumbent Steve Holly did not seek another term.

The winner is Republican Dane Watro, who got 259 votes to 232 for Democratic challenger Robert S. Wills.

There was a race for three seats on borough council with five candidates on the ballot.

The top three finishers were Peter P. Minneci, who had both nominations, 350, followed by Democrat John J. Shigao, 281, and Republican Edward J. Bielen Sr., 238. Finishing out of the running were Republican Francis Frank Orem with 21 and Democrat Clara Preputnick with 206.

Democrat Andrew T. DeBalko won the tax collector position by defeating Republican William J. Slovik, 294 to 198.

In other voting, first judge of election Democrat Debbie Stefanisko, 159; first inspector Republican Georgine Borchick, 107, and Democrat Chelsea Madochick, 106; second judge Democrat Sally Updike, 214; and second inspector Republican Margaret M. Miller, 135, and Democrat Michael Miller, 115.

Kline Township

No races in Kline Township.

Vote totals: supervisor, six years, Matthew P. Corra Sr., both nominations, 259; tax collector, Stephen J. Sheer, both nominations, 273; judge of election, no candidate; inspector, Republican Roseann Vigna, 220, and Democrat Sybil Hillman Katona, 72; auditor, six years, Republican Mauro S. Notaro, 265.

New Philadelphia

No races in New Philadelphia, with a shortage of candidates.

Incumbent Democrat Frances C. Tkach got 104 votes for mayor. But there were 175 write-in votes, which won’t be counted until Friday that could change the result.

Council, four years, four to be elected, Democrats Elizabeth Benulis and Christine Carey got 141 and 103 votes respectively. There were no other candidates, however, there were 549 write-in votes which will determine the other two seats.

Council, two years, no candidate, but there were 70 write-in votes.

Other voting: Democrat Robert J. Frantz, tax collector, 247; judge of election, Democrat Josie Yeneshosky, 247; inspector Republican Anna Williams, 140; and Democrat Helen A. Smeltz, 136.

Ryan Township

No races in Ryan Township.

The vote totals: supervisor, six years, Republican David R. Morgan, 488; tax collector, Mary Peca, both nominations, 538; judge of election Republican Christine H. Wartman, 498; inspector Republican Judith A. Sanchez, 356 and Democrat Michelle Mistishen, 186; auditor, two years, Republican Daniel A. Gerber, 471; auditor, six years, Republican Pamela Smith-Gerber, 469.

Middleport

A race for a seat on borough council, four-year term, with three to be elected and four candidates.

Top three finishers were Democrats John R. DiFilippo Jr., 71; Joseph A. Rolenaitis, 66; and Republican Wendy Dempsey, 65. Odd person out is Democrat Mary Jane Heisner, 59.

Judge of election and inspector, no candidates.

Blythe Township

No races in Blythe Township.

The vote totals: supervisor, six years, Chris Wallace, both nominations, 219; tax collector, Democrat Joan M. Dranginis, 239; judge of election Democrat Diana L. Kustan, 218; inspector Democrat Dorothy Pelachick, 228; and auditor, six years, Democrat Theresa A. Hinchey, 221.

Delano Township
