Penn Forest voters to fill two supervisor seats
In Penn Forest Township, two candidates are running for the six-year term of outgoing supervisor Christine Fazio.
They are Democratic contender and current supervisor Roger L. Meckes and Republican contender, Tom Cross.
A second seat is open to replace former supervisor Phillip Shedaker. Shedaker resigned his position in May 2016.
Meckes was appointed to replace Shedaker until the next general election. Meckes has served on the board since June of 2016 and is currently assistant roadmaster.
Only Meckes is on the ballot for the two-year term, assuring him his return to the board.
Both candidates were asked to provide a brief bio and to include a statement explaining how they would improve the office of supervisor if elected.
“I have been a resident of this community for my entire life,” said Meckes. “I’ve volunteered and held leadership roles within the fire department and ambulance for the last 30 years and I see what our growing community needs. I am currently filling an appointed position on the board of supervisors for Penn Forest Township. I am an avid outdoors man; my family and I enjoy spending time out in our community.”
“I will continue to make decisions that will positively impact our residents and the community,” Meckes said in response to the question as to how he would improve the office.
“I have extensive background in construction and roadwork that I will use to assist the other supervisors when making improvements within the township. As a resident of this community I continue to support not implementing the township tax. As a township supervisor I will do my best for the residents and our community.”
Cross is retired from the Garden City School District, where he was transportation director.
He has been married for 46 years and has three grown children.
“I served as a volunteer fireman in Flower Hill Hose Company, Port Washington, New York, and also at the City of Glen Cove Volunteer Fire Department as a driver and trainer for 20 years,” Cross said in his response. “I was also chief for eight years.”
He added, “I am asking for your vote for Penn Forest Township Supervisor. I am a fiscal conservative that believes in living within a budget. I am also an advocate for sharing services when feasible.”
“I look forward to joining the Penn Forest Township Supervisors,” Cross said.
