Judges of elections/inspectors of elections
Voters in Carbon County will have the opportunity to vote for the people who oversee elections in each of the 51 voting districts of the county when the 2017 General Election is held on Tuesday.
The positions of judges of elections and inspectors of elections — all four-year terms — are scheduled to be filled by the electorate this time around. While they are not likely to get the attention that contests for mayor, council, supervisors, tax collector or school board usually receive from voters in municipal elections, the candidates nonetheless are subject to voters’ preference.
By law, each election district elects a judge of elections, who is ultimately responsible for the conduct of elections within the precinct walls. In addition, each party — Democratic and Republican — seats an inspector of elections who typically is representative of their respective parties in each polling place. Clerks, who are not elected, are also part of the process, however, they are appointed to work on Election Day.
