Weatherly ‘haunter’ lights up Halloween
Angel Grant’s Halloween display is far from the scariest in the area, but it is certainly one of the most extensive.
The lighthearted Halloween display, located on Church Street in Weatherly, includes more than 500 blow molds — the illuminated plastic decorations which are seen less and less around the holidays.
Grant, a self-professed “haunter,” purposely keeps her outdoor display friendly. It attracts young children, families with children with special needs as well as adults who feel nostalgia for the old plastic decorations.
“I’ve always loved Halloween and vintage Halloween,” Grant said.
The display was inspired by her son, Roman, who has autism, as a way to overcome a fear of Halloween.
Fifteen years later, she needs a storage unit to hold all of her blow molds. She used to go all out for Christmas, too, but the setup and take down for two holidays became too much. Now she re-purposes old Christmas blow molds — stripping them of their paint and repainting them with a Halloween theme.
Grant said she loves the scary part of Halloween too, but trick-or-treaters have to go elsewhere to see that.
“We have some very good friends here in town, just on the other side of West Main, and they do something scary in their yard. Between the two of us, we have something for everyone,” she said.
Despite being slightly off the beaten path for trick-or-treaters in Weatherly, the house draws a big crowd.
Grant will leave the display up for a few days after Halloween so her fellow “haunters” can have a look.
The community of “haunters” is a big part of why she does it — they encourage each other and visit each others’ displays.
But she’s also inspired by the classic feeling of trick-or-treat night.
“When you have good weather, it is absolute magic.
“There is nothing like actual trick-or-treating, the rustling of the leaves, and the sound of the children. It’s awesome,” she said.
