October 31, 1940 — Charley “Broomy” Melley scores a pair of touchdowns and Coaldale’s defense posts a shutout as the Tigers gain a 20-0 victory over West Hazleton. After a scoreless first half, the winners open the third quarter with a 77-yard drive which is capped by Melley’s 3-yard scoring run. Coaldale, coached by Tom Raymer, adds to its lead later in the frame when “Teeler” Jabbo reaches the end zone on a 28-yard run. The Tigers seal the win in the final quarter on an 81-yard touchdown scamper by Melley.
