Carbon County is hoping to pair a few veterans with some of its shelter dogs in November.
To entice more to visit the pups that are up for adoption, the county has slashed the adoption fee in half for all veterans looking to adopt.
The adoption fee for anyone who served in the military will be $50 for the month of November instead of the normal $100.
“There are 22 dogs at the shelter,” Commissioner Thomas J. Gerhard said Thursday during the county commissioners’ meeting, noting that the shelter has only 15 kennels.
Gerhard added that the idea to provide half price adoptions for veterans was suggested by Tom Connors, director of the shelter.
Connors said Thursday afternoon that he was glad to hear the commissioners approved his request.
“No other group is more deserving than our veterans to get a discount and sometimes by adopting a dog, it changes their lives,” he said. “We have some good dogs here so hopefully this works for both veterans and the dogs.”
He said veterans interested in visiting the pups that are up for adoption can do so by coming in to the shelter at 63 Broad St., Nesquehoning, during public business hours, Tuesday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
