It’s finally getting cold outside, but the District 11 postseason is about to heat up.

Eighteen Times News area teams qualified for district competition this year. Postseason play will begin on Tuesday, when six area teams will aim to start the playoffs on a positive note.

FIELD HOCKEY

Coming off a state playoff appearance last season, Lehighton earned the No. 2 seed in class 1A under first-year head coach Corrine McConville. The Indians will get a bye into the semifinals.

Also in Class 1A, No. 5 seed Northern Lehigh will travel to No. 4 Bethlehem Catholic and No. 6 Northwestern will visit No. 3 Saucon Valley. Both of those quarterfinal round games are on Wednesday, Oct. 25 at 4 p.m.

Lehighton will face the winner of the Northwestern-Saucon Valley game.

BOYS SOCCER

In Class 1A, Weatherly earned the No. 6 seed and will travel to No. 3 seed Notre Dame of East Stroudsburg on Thursday, Oct. 26.

Class 2A features two Times News area teams, and both will open up district competition on Tuesday. Jim Thorpe is the third seed and will host Pine Grove at 5 p.m., while seventh-seeded Palmerton travels to No. 2 Pen Argyl at 3:30 p.m.

After a deep state playoff run in 2016, Northwestern has run the table so far this season and added a Colonial League title to its resume in 3A — earning the No. 1 seed. The unbeaten Tigers will take on the winner of Southern Lehigh-Saucon Valley in the semifinal round.

Pleasant Valley will represent the area in 4A. The eighth-seeded Bears take on No. 9 William Allen at home on Tuesday in a first round game.

GIRLS SOCCER

In Class 2A, a pair of Times News area teams meet in the quarterfinals as No. 1 seed Northwestern hosts No. 8 seed Tamaqua in a 3:30 p.m. start.

Also in 2A, No. 7 seed Palmerton will travel to No. 2 seed Palisades for a 4 p.m. start.

Pleasant Valley earned the fourth seed and will open up play by hosting No. 5 Pocono Mountain East in a Class 4A game on Thursday, Oct. 26.

VOLLEYBALL

Marian Catholic is making a strong case to come out of District 11 again this season, earning the No. 1 seed in Class 1A and winning the Schuylkill League title.

The Fillies will receive a bye into Thursday’s semifinal round.

Also in 1A, No. 6 seed Weatherly will travel to No. 3 seed Mahanoy Area for a quarterfinal game on Oct. 24 at 6 p.m.

Panther Valley had a strong season and Schuylkill League semifinals appearance, which earned the Panthers the No. 1 seed in Class 2A and a semifinal date with Schuylkill Haven on Thursday, Oct. 26 at 7 p.m. at Blue Mountain.

In the other 2A semi, No. 2 seed Jim Thorpe will face No. 3 seed Pine Grove in the opening game of Thursday’s doubleheader at Blue Mountain at 5:30.

Lehighton will represent the area as the seventh seed in 3A. The Tribe will travel to Allentown Central Catholic on Wednesday, Oct. 25 at 5 p.m.

Pleasant Valley will be part of the Class 4A field, which will open their 12-team sub-regional tournament on Thursday.

CROSS COUNTRY

The District 11 cross country championship will be held on Wednesday at Bethlehem Municipal. There will be three classes and six races, beginning at 1 p.m. Marian’s Tina Capparell will look to defend her title in Class 1A.
