Fat quarters, stitch in the ditch, stash and fussy cut.

You may hear these terms used during the annual quilt show to be held from noon to 4 p.m. Sunday at the Palmerton Area Library.

This is the 11th year of this popular event, and between 80 to 100 new, antique and “much loved” quilts are expected to be on display. Some quilts will also be available for purchase.

People who are interested in participating by entering their quilt can drop them off at the library any day this week during library hours. Saturday will be the last day entries will be accepted for the show.

Quilts on display will be entered into the “People’s Choice” contest. The public will be able to cast its vote for their favorite and the winner will receive $100.

“We do this each year to promote quilting in this area. It gives people a chance to bring their quilts out of hiding and display their work,” said Terry Scheckler, coordinator of the show.

“Even though I am the coordinator, the women of the Sew What Quilters Guild and the library workers actually work very hard to organize and put on this show,” Sheckler said.

Scheckler learned the art of quilt making from her mother-in-law many years ago. She finished her first project and was hooked. She has made over 200 quilts and quilting projects so far.

Quilted items such as purses, wall hangings, table runners and related items will also be on display Sunday.

Quilter and charter member of the guild, Carol Costenbader, said she became interested in quilting when she retired six years ago.

Sew What is a guild where members on any skill level can bring whatever projects they are working on or have finished.

“While shopping, I bumped into a former economics teacher who said she would be glad to teach me the basics of quilting,” said Costenbader.

“I visited with Barbara Fisher over a period of time, and she helped me with my first project — a Christmas table runner.

“Quilting is a great hobby. Making quilts for children and grandchildren is a nice legacy,” she said.

The event will include door prizes and a raffle with a variety of sewing related items to be given away.

Vendors will be on hand selling sewing notions and demonstrations will take place on a variety of different things, such as how to make a Tuffet stool.

The Quilted Crow, located across the street from the library, will be opened for browsing and shopping in the afternoon.

A $5 donation will be accepted at the door.
