Bears fall in tennis quarterfinals

OREFIELD — One day after etching their names in Pleasant Valley’s girls tennis record books, Masani Francis and Haley White saw their high school careers end in the quarterfinals of the District 11 Class 3A doubles tournament.

On Tuesday at Parkland High School, Francis and White dropped a 6-2, 6-2 decision to Nazareth’s Halle DeNardo and Jenn Soika, the tourney’s No. 2 seeded team.

After winning a pair of matches on Monday, including an upset of No. 7 seed Northampton, the Bears’ unseeded doubles team ran out of magic.

“Nazareth is really tough,” said Pleasant Valley coach Mark Allison. “We knew going in that we had very little margin for error.

“But I thought Masani and Haley played well. We won a couple games in each set and lost a few deuce games as well. Overall, I was happy with our play. It was a fairly tight match. Nazareth was just a very good team.”

Pleasant Valley’s best stretch of play came during the second set when it jumped out to a 2-1 lead and was holding serve. But Nazareth flexed its muscles as DeNardo and Sokia reeled off eight straight points to regain control and went on to close out the match.

“We had a little momentum in the second set, but Nazareth put together its most dominant games in the match and got it back,” said Allison. “We had a couple double faults and failed to put away a couple shots at the net during that stretch and Nazareth took advantage of it. That’s what good teams do.”

Despite their impressive run into day two of the tournament, and the pride they said they felt in making it to the quarterfinal round, both Francis and White thought they could have played better.

“I thought we played better Monday,” said Frances. “But Nazareth was a really good team and didn’t give us any easy points.

“Haley and I still had fun out there. Overall, it was a pretty good run.”

White added, “I thought we played okay. It definitely wasn’t our best performance. But just getting this far in the tournament was exciting. We came in unseeded so for us to make it day two was something not many people expected.”

ONE OF TWO ...Only one other doubles team in school history had reached the District 11 quarterfinals before Frances and White did it this year. In 2014, Madison Olexson and Kara Urland also advanced to day two. They also lost their quarterfinal match that year.

TENNIS SIBLINGS ... Both Pleasant Valley players have brothers who made or are making a name for themselves on the Bears’ boys team. White’s brother Jon was a four-year standout who graduated in 2015. Jon and doubles partner Jon Walmach are the only team in PV school history to capture a district title and advance to the PIAA state championships. Francis’ twin brother Najja was a starter in the Bears’ singles lineup the last two seasons.

FINALS SET ... The Nazareth duo of DeNardo and Sokia posted a 6-2, 7-6 (7-5) victory over Southern Lehigh to advance to Thursday’s championship match against Freedom.
