Phantoms get season off to solid start
The Phantoms had their first three-game weekend of the season and came through it in good shape, winning two of the three games to up their record to 3-1-0-1 on the year.
In their first five games, two have been decided by shootouts, with a shootout win over Hershey Sunday night following a shootout loss in Hartford on the first Sunday of the season.
Chris Conner netted the clinching goal in the third round of shootouts Sunday to give Lehigh Valley a 4-3 win in Hershey. The victory was the fifth in a row for the Phantoms playing in Hershey, and capped another strong performance by goalie Alex Lyon, who has played all five of Lehigh Valley’s games.
Lehigh Valley came into the final period down 1-0, but Philippe Myers picked up his first professional goal and Danick Martel scored his fifth of the season in the comeback. Nicolas Aube-Kubel scored his second of the year.
Myers and Aube-Kubel scored less than a minute apart, and it was just three minutes later when Martel capitalized. Shortly after his goal, Martel put one off the post and was later stopped by goalie Parker Milner.
“Great to see us come out in the third period and score three goals. It’s a big-character win for us to be able to finish up the weekend,” said head coach Scott Gordon.
The first goal of Myers’ pro career capped a weekend that showed Gordon a lot about the highly-touted prospect, who has admittedly struggled at times in the early going.
“This was his best game of the weekend,” noted Gordon. “I thought he struggled Friday night, and we talked to him the next day and showed him some clips and right away he adapted to the adjustments we asked him to make. He’s going to be a good player.”
The Bears also had some third-period heroics, bouncing back from a 3-1 deficit on goals by Jonas Siegenthalet and Colby Williams. Siegenthaler’s goal came just 18 seconds after Martel made it 3-1 and Williams’ goal was a power-play goal. The Phantoms were without power play standout T.J. Brennan, who missed the game with an injury, helping the Bears to go 2-for-4 with the man advantage.
SAME OLD HEROICS ... Coming from behind to win isn’t anything new to the Phantoms. Last season, Lehigh Valley led the AHL with nine come-from-behind wins when trailing after two periods. So far this season, there has only been two AHL games that went to shootouts, and Lehigh Valley has played in both of them.
THE YOUNG GUYS ... Myers wasn’t the first Phantoms player to net his first professional goal. On Saturday night against Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, Mike Vecchione picked up his first AHL goal in a win over the Penguins. Vecchione tallied 176 points in 149 games playing for Union College and was signed to an entry-level contract with the Flyers last March.
THE OLD GUY ... Winger Chris Conner played in the 725th game of his professional career Saturday night. The 33-year old has played in 545 games in the AHL and another 180 games in the NHL. His career has spanned 12 seasons, and he’s approaching the 500-point milestone, currently sitting at 492 points, with 186 goals and 306 assists in his career.
