Weatherly covers delinquent lunch accounts
The Weatherly School Board Wednesday approved moving $1,170 from the district’s general fund to the cafeteria fund in order to cover delinquent student lunch accounts from the previous school year.
The board addressed agenda items including the potential hiring of three new employees for its cleaning staff after Patricia Coll, Nicole Ryno and Donna Miller resigned within a month of each other.
The board authorized maintenance supervisor William Moyer to search for new members for the needed positions.
During the monthly voting meeting Wednesday night board member Gerard Grega was absent for the second consecutive meeting without informing the rest of the board, according to new Business Manager and Board Secretary Peter Bard.
The approval of a donation of a historical picture from the school to the American Legion was given after Georgeann Herling suggested donating a picture of the USS Constitution to the Weatherly Legion.
The picture is framed in actual wood from the hull of the ship that was constructed in 1791.
“It was one of the first naval ships and donated to the graduating class of 1929,” Bard said.
“It was sitting in the records storage room before. The Legion will get good use of it,” he said.
The curriculum committee will work to resurrect the program for this school year.
Board member Matthew vonFrisch said the former committee is “looking to start things. I have all the previous agendas and notes. I did say we have a good group of people, educators, staff and committee members. We’ll pick up that committee shortly,” he said.
Concerned mother Lisa Bartel, spoke during public comment about the district’s curriculum for this year, saying, “I’ve seen some things and heard some things and I just want to make sure the communication is clear between teachers.”
Bartel said her children have come home with repeat lessons early in this school year.
“Is the general and special education curriculum being looked at? I saw one of our students not be able to give change at a concession stand and I was concerned. Unfortunately our education system forgets the basics sometimes,” she said.
Bartel also said she was worried about students’ transition from high school to college, saying it is important for students to learn the basics before moving on to higher education.
“We need to make sure that kids are able to cite things and have good study and organization skills,” she said.
“These are just things I want to make sure we are addressing,” she said.
