Schuylkill commissioners prepare for Nov. 7 election

Schuylkill County commissioners are gearing up for the Nov. 7 general election.

On Wednesday, they approved election chief Frannie Brennan’s request to hire four resolution board members for $100 each to work on election night at the Schuylkill Transportation System building in Saint Clair.

The members are Jeanne Porter, Mike Vigoda, George Moyer, and Edward Barket.

Commissioners also approved Brennan’s request to hire six people for the computing board for $70 each per day, beginning at 9 a.m. Nov. 13.

They are Joann Myers, Rose Kern, Joann Dower, Sharon Chiao, Susan Kester, and Thomas O’Neill.

In other matters Wednesday, commissioners approved a $20,000 contract with ARRO Consulting for engineering services for a Community Development Block Grant stormwater project in Delano Township.

Commissioners also issued proclamations recognizing Make A Difference Day and the Pottsville Business and Professional Women’s Club.

Make A Difference Day is the largest national day of community service, said director Janice Johnston.

Locally, it will be held the week of Oct. 28. The day aims to improve the quality of life for communities by inviting volunteers to help with projects that fight against hunger, domestic violence, substance abuse, illiteracy, loneliness, fear, and other negative influences.

Schuylkill County has been participating since 1996. To date, 2,320 projects have been completed with an average of 6,000 participants annually, Johnston said.

Commissioners lauded groups that drive the program, including Community Volunteers In Action, Retired Senior Volunteers, and Schuylkill Community Action.

Johnston invited people to call her office at 570 628-1426 or email her at jjohnston@co.schuylkill.pa.us for project ideas or to register a project.

The Business and Professional Women’s Club, which is celebrating its 85th anniversary this year, provides scholarships to female students at local high schools, the Pottsville School of Nursing, and Penn State Schuylkill.
