The combination of agriculture and ethnic heritage makes Carbon County one of the best places to get halupkies and halushki.

This Saturday, Weatherly’s first-ever cabbage festival will showcase local farmers and culture.

Eurana Park will host the festival, which takes place from noon to 6 p.m. It’s a combined effort between the borough of Weatherly and the Carbon Chamber and Economic Development Corporation.

The event is free to the public.

“It really started as a way to acknowledge the agriculture in the county, and across the state. Because Weatherly’s blessed to be bordered on both sides by farmland and great families that have been there for generations,” Mayor Tom Connors said.

The schedule for the event includes live music, a halushki cooking contest, a tractor show and parade, and games for kids. Members of the family that operated Erdman Dairy, once located in Weatherly, will do a presentation on the history of that business.

The tractors will parade through the town starting at 11 a.m., ending at the park.

The American Cancer Society, Weatherly Area Community Library and the Weatherly Hillclimb are among the local organizations will be selling a variety of foods to help raise money.

It will also be a chance for people not familiar with Eurana Park to enjoy the public space as the area hits its peak fall foliage. The park features a disc golf course, a spring-fed swimming lake during summer, a dirt bicycle jump track, as well as a historic pavilion and bandshell.

“Eurana Park is something that everyone in the county should see. It’s a beautiful spot in Weatherly,” said Alice Wanamaker of the Carbon chamber.

The event has a long list of local sponsors. Last week, Connors, Wanamaker and Carbon County Commissioner Tom Gerhard visited one of them — Zimmerman’s Dairy in Lehighton. They received $350 in donations from the dairy. Tommy Zimmerman of Zimmerman’s Dairy said his favorite food with cabbage is halupkies.

“The Zimmerman family is very supportive, all throughout the community. They’ve always been that way, no matter when you reach out to them,” Gerhard said.

Sernak Farms, located in Packer Township, is donating the cabbage.

The Weatherly Area Museum will also be open from 1-4 p.m. during the festival.

There will be limited edition T-shirts featuring the logo designed by local designer Les Sincavage.
