Palmerton elementary students enjoy a fun run
Having put in the hard work of raising funds, Parkside and S.S. Palmer Elementary students kicked back for a day of fun activities Thursday in the Palmerton Borough Park.
Each grade level, K-6, took a turn participating in the fourth annual Bomber Fun Run.
“The students raise money by getting donations and there are different incentives depending on the levels that they raise,” said Tiffany Lakatosh of the Palmer/Parkside parent-teacher organization and chairperson for the fun run.
Thursday’s fun run had a Halloween theme and the games set up throughout the park featured a spooky twist. Students aimed to toss rings on witches’ hats and also toss balls in a cauldron, in addition to a lap around the park.
The PTO also rented an inflatable fun house to cap off the event.
“This is our fourth year and each year it has changed a little and grown as it has evolved,” Lakatosh said. “The students really have a good time.”
Money raised is used by the PTO for field trips and different activities throughout the year. Last year’s event raised around $9,000.
“All of the students benefit from what we raise here,” Lakatosh said. “We do Christmas gifts for them. In the past they have gotten dufflebags, sweatshirts and things that every kid may need. We have done field trips to different places like the DaVinci Science Center, Steamtown, the Philadelphia Zoo and Iron Pigs games.”
Depending on how much students raised, they may get to see PTO officers, their teachers or even Parkside/Palmer Principal Mary Brumbach take a pie to the face. That event would take place later in the school year.
