Local Sports Roundup: Games of Oct. 3

Marian and Panther Valley both earned Schuylkill League sweeps on Tuesday to remain undefeated.

VOLLEYBALL

Marian-Weatherly

Marian swept Weatherly in Schuylkill League action 25-15, 25-16, 26-17.

Jasmine Mooney had 13 kills, nine digs and four aces for Marian (13-0). Gianna Agosti drilled 10 aces and dished out 27 assists. Toni Galasso added eight digs, while Alivia Karchner chipped in six kills and two blocks.

N. Schuylkill-Panther Vy.

Panther Valley swept North Schuylkill in Schuylkill League play 25-8, 25-14, 25-8.

Christina Dacey led the Panthers (12-0) with 11 kills and eight digs.

Olivia Dacey had seven kills and 12 digs, Emily Kwaak chipped in six kills, and Jenna Dubosky posted 19 assists.

Northwestern-Saucon Vy.

Saucon Valley swept Northwestern 25-23, 25-14, 25-20 in Colonial League action.

Emily Corke had 19 digs for Northwestern, while Sarah Sekerak had 10 kills. Ashley Bennicoff had 11 digs and 12 assists.

Pine Grove-Tamaqua

Pine Grove topped Tamaqua in a SchuylkilL League Match 25-21, 25-22, 23-25, 25-21.

Ella McLaughlin paced the Raiders with 21 digs and four aces. Kaitlyn Stauffenberg had 14 assists and six digs, while Savannah Adams had five kills and five blocks.

No. Lehigh, Northwestern, So. Lehigh, Salisbury, Catsauqua, at Palmerton

Northern Lehigh, Northwestern, and Palmerton competed in a six-team Colonial League meet on Tuesday.

Northwestern, Palmerton, and Northern Lehigh each finished 2-1 on the boys’ side.

Palmerton’s Jacob Martinez had the best local finish in second place with a time of 18:44.52. Northwestern’s Phillip Castrine came in fourth, and Northern Lehigh’s Preston Kemery finished seventh.

On the girls’ side, Northwestern went 3-0, while Northern Lehigh finished 2-1 and Palmerton 0-2-1.

Northwestern’s Kailyn Jones came in first with a time of 22:47.34. Reagan Pender finished seconf for Northern Lehigh, and Northwestern’s Molly Tarvin came in fourth.

Saucon Valley-Lehighton

Lehighton improved to 10-4 overall with a 3-1 non-league win over Saucon Valley.

Lauren Marks paved the way for the Tribe with two goals. Kaia Slaw added another.

The Indians poured on 20 shots on goal during the win.

Palmerton-Pen Argyl

Pen Argyl blanked Palmerton in Colonial League action, 2-0.

Lauren Reduzzia and Mikayla Velasquez scored for the Green Knights.

GIRLS SOCCER

Catasauqua-No. Lehigh

Catasauqua edged Northern Lehigh in a Colonial League match, 3-2.

Shaina Mazzocca and Jill Olewine both scored goals for the Bulldogs, who held an 11-9 edge in shots.

N. Schuylkill-Jim Thorpe

Jim Thorpe’s Lydia Wallace scored in overtime to lift the Olympians to a 4-3 Schuylkill League win over North Schuylkill.

Wallace scored at the 4:08 mark off a feed from Heidi Washel.

Jackie Condly netted a pair of goals for Thorpe, which was celebrating Senior Night. Eve Morris also tallied for the winners, while Wallace added an assist.

Tamaqua-Pottsville

Pottsville earned a 6-0 Schuylkill League win over Tamaqua.

Carly Hoak had two goals and an assist to lead the Crimson Tide.

The Blue Raiders (5-8-1) had eight shots in the contest.

BOYS SOCCER

Tamaqua-Nativity

Nativity blanked Tamaqua in Schuylkill League crossover action, 7-0.

Cristian Vazquez had four goals for Nativity, while David Vazquez had a goal and an assist.

The Hilltoppers managed a 14-10 advantage in shots.

The JV game ended in a 2-2 tie.

MIDDLE SCHOOL

FOOTBALL

Pottsville-Tamaqua

Joey Coleman scored three touchdowns to help Tamaqua post a 38-32 comeback win over Pottsville.

Coleman scored on an 11-yard run and caught TD passes of 64 and 25 yards from Nate Gregorie.

Gregorie completed 5-of-9 passes for 125 yards and also ran for 83 yards and two scores.

The Blue Raiders also received interceptions on defense from Steve Kestecky and Trevor O’Brien.

Lehighton-N. Schuylkill

Lehighton handed North Schuylkill its first loss of the season with a 27-22 victory.

Brendan Zimmerman had two kickoff returns for touchdowns for the Indians (3-1-1).

Hunter Crum had a touchdown reception and Cam Knappenberger added a TD run and two-point conversion.

Knappenberger also had several pass break-ups and a game-saving tackle as time ran out to lead the defense.
