District defends athletes amid allegations

Lehighton Area School District has taken exception to a statement by a borough resident alleging that football players are visitors to a house she believes is a center of drug activity.

Borough resident Joann Keiser, who lives in the 100 block of Bridge Street, told borough council Monday she has a major drug problem next to her.

In a story Tuesday, Keiser told council that sometimes there are as many as 30 to 40 people a day who visit next to her, and said those include women pushing strollers/baby carriages going in and getting drugs and coming out.

She told council she sees people pulling in front with little children, toddlers in the car getting the toddlers out, going in, getting drugs and coming out.

Keiser also told council said she’s seen the Lehighton football players going in there in uniform getting drugs, in and out.

In response to those allegations, Kyle Spotts, Lehighton Area School District Director of Student Services and Facilities Planning, issued a statement on behalf of the district.

“We have had conversations with the Lehighton Police Department and have been informed at this point there is no reason to believe any Lehighton Area School District athletes have entered or exited the residence in question,” Spotts said. “We have full trust in the Lehighton Police Department in assuring the safety of our community and students. We look forward to working together on any future concerns.”

Keiser said that situation has been going on for about five years, and told council she’s been to the hospital between six to eight times in the past two years because she gets ill over it.

She said when her neighbors know she calls police, they vandalize her vehicle.

The neighbors shoot at her dog, and also shoot robins in her yard, Keiser said.

She said police are aware of the situation, as she’s brought the matter to their attention on several occasions.

Borough police Chief Brian Biechy said the police department is “well aware” of Keiser’s situation.

Contacted this morning, Biechy said police are investigating the allegations.

“My conversation with the school personnel were that we didn’t have any information to support what she was saying,” Biechy said. “We’re looking into everything that she alleged.”

Biechy said he believes the drug issue in the borough is in line with that of neighboring municipalities.

“I think we’re consistent with the rest of the area,” he said. “We’re always active in fighting the drug issue.”
