Standoff ends with no injuries
A standoff in Summit Hill was settled with no injuries late Wednesday morning.
The incident began when a call came in for a suicidal person on East Richards Street.Police from throughout Carbon County and state police special response teams set up at the home of Fred Evans Jr. and began negotiating with him to come out.Just before 8:30 a.m. a loud boom was heard in the area as the Pennsylvania State Police SERT team set off a concussion grenade near the front of the garage in which Evans was holed up.Two more were set off later in between negotiations through a loudspeaker. The negotiator repeatedly asked him to come out of the house with his hands empty and lie facedown in the street. He also emphasized that all they wanted to do was help him.At 10 a.m., the man's parents arrived on scene to talk to him.Shortly after 11 a.m. police shot tear gas into the garage from at least three different directions.A team of three was positioned on Fell Street, while a team of two fired gas from Richards Street near Oak Street.Another trooper fired from behind the police armored vehicle parked directly in front of the house.About 10 minutes later members of the SERT team wearing gas masks entered the building and removed Evans. He was taken to an ambulance waiting nearby.North Chestnut at the Route 902 intersection and Lehigh, and the intersection of East Fell and Oak streets was blocked off by police units during the event.Police from Summit Hill, Nesquehoning and Jim Thorpe were also on scene.School buses were diverted during the incident.This isn't the first time police were called for an incident with Evans on East Richards Street.According to Times News archives, in December 2012, police responded to an early morning standoff when Evans threatened to blow up his home after he opened valves to propane tanks outside his property.Residents in the surrounding blocks were evacuated as a result. He was eventually taken into custody and charged with risking catastrophe and disorderly conduct. He pleaded guilty to disorderly conduct and the risking catastrophe charge was withdrawn.
