It appears that repairs are in the foreseeable future for a problem that has vexed Weissport Borough Council for some time.
The council was informed on Monday that it has been approved for a Community Development Block Grant totaling $81,500 for stormwater improvements on Bridge Street.Bill Donovan, secretary-treasurer of the borough, said he was informed by the Carbon County Commissioners that the block grant was approved for 2017.Drainage on Bridge Street in the area of White Street during heavy rain has been a problem for at least several years.In March, council Vice President Arland Moyer, who is also chairman of the streets and flood levee committee, said the borough has a serious drainage problem on Bridge Street but has no funds to do anything about it.In other business• Council member Brenda Leiby urged the council to have an inspection done on the roof of the borough hall to determine what repairs are necessary.• Council members were advised to attend a special dedication program at 1 p.m. Saturday for the dedication of a Betty Mullen Brey Monument in the borough park.Brey, a former Weissport resident, competed for the United States at the 1956 Olympic Games in Melbourne, Australia. She did not officially win any Olympic medals due to the rules at the time, but she would have won a medal with modern rules. She was a prelim swimmer for the 4ÃÂ100 meter freestyle relay that went on to win a silver medal in finals. At the time, only the final swimmers were awarded Olympic medals.She won two gold and two silver medals between the 1951 and 1955 Pan American Games. In addition to her medals, she also held the World Record in the 100 SCM butterfly.• Council member Linda Schoenberger said well more than $1,000 was made by the Recreation Commission during the town's semiannual yard sale last weekend.• Donovan said a letter was received from the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation stating the borough's 2018 Liquid Fuels Allocation for 2018 will be $12,836.99.
