Those with a passion for local history and heritage attractions should mark Saturday on their calendars.
That's when the 11th annual Anthracite Heritage Festival will be held at Mauch Chunk Lake Park in Jim Thorpe. The event will run from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Cost of admission is $5 per person, and free for children ages 12 and under. It will feature historical exhibits, as well as crafters, food vendors and kids activities, according to Dave Horvath, park director.Horvath said historical exhibits will be on display courtesy of Eckley Miners' Village Museum, the Weatherly Area Museum, and Mauch Chunk Museum and Cultural Center. He said there will also be entertainment in the form of bluegrass music, with performances from Coal County Express, Sereme Green, Big Valley Bluegrass, Grillbillie Project, and Free Range Folk.Horvath said a variety of food vendors will be on hand selling treats such as brisket sandwiches, french fries, soups and peach cobbler. For children, there will also be hayrides and pumpkin painting for kids, he said."It's the end of the season, the last weekend of summer, time to get ready for fall," Horvath said. "Some of the crafters have fall crafts, the hayride and pumpkin painting for kids is always popular."Horvath said the Anthracite Heritage Festival is a "good family event.""It's an opportunity for those who have never been here before to come out to the park and see what we have to offer," he said. "It's to increase awareness of the park to try to get people to the park that maybe have never been here before just to showcase our facilities, and to have a good, successful, fun event for families."Horvath said camping is available for those who wish to camp overnight by calling 570-325-3669.He said proceeds raised during the event will go toward the park's operating costs.
