Man gets state time for assault on inmate
Another defendant in an assault in an inmate case at the Carbon County prison which resulted in serious injuries to the victim, was sentenced to a state prison term on Friday in the county court after pleading guilty to his part in the incident.
Bradesky Junior Santos, 24, of Tresckow, pleaded to one count of simple assault and was immediately sentenced by Judge Joseph J. Matika to serve six to 12 months in a state correction institution.Santos was one of six charged with assault inmate Rodney Rider, 35, of Nesquehoning.Also charged by Nesquehoning police were inmates Luis Reinaldo Aviles-Muniz, 20, of Hazleton; Kyle Joseph Anderson, 25, of Philadelphia; Joshua Ynoe Mejia, 24, of Hazleton; Jason Christopher Soraci, 24, of Weatherly; and Kevin Alejandro Polanco Perez, 18, of Hazleton.According to police, the charges are a result of the inmates entering the victim's cell and dragging him from his bed before punching, kicking and stomping on him. Following the attack, the victim was left lying on the floor of his cell. No other inmates alerted prison staff to the attack.Police said Rider suffered "very serious bodily injury," including fractured bones, multiple lacerated organs, internal bleeding and a concussion and was taken via helicopter to St. Luke's Trauma Center in Bethlehem, where he underwent surgery.Patrolman Carl Breiner reported in the affidavit of probable cause that following the attack the victim told police that the assault was a result of a disagreement he had with Anderson over the use of a television the day before.Santos is currently serving a state prison term of 27 to 54 months on drug charges which Matika imposed on June 2. He pleaded to two counts of criminal conspiracy - possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance and one count of possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance.Santos was one of 11 arrested in 2015 for their roles in a major drug operation in the county.At the time of the roundup of the 11, District Attorney Jean A. Engler labeled the drug selling as "Operation 93 Pipeline" because the drug traffickers were bringing the heroin from Luzerne County into Carbon County via Route 93.Matika ruled the new sentence runs consecutive to the drug sentence.Santos was also ordered to make restitution for medical bills incurred by Rider for the assault. Santos' prorated restitution is $2,183.04. He must also pay court costs of about $1,000, when paroled render 25 hours of community service and have no contact with Rider.
