Raider 'playmakers' deliver

It's tough enough to play one position, but how about excelling at two or three?

The Tamaqua football team has a diverse offense, and many different playmakers can line up at any position. The Raiders took on a desperate Schuylkill Haven football team on Friday night - and they showed the Schuylkill Football League that they're for real. Tamaqua poured on points in a variety of ways en route to a 41-27 win over the Hurricanes."We worked hard and we played hard," said Tamaqua tailback Nick Brieiner, who racked up 205 rushing yards. "It just paid off. We wanted to work hard, have a good mindset, not do anything stupid, and just get the job done."It means a lot. Team work came through today."Breiner took a 44-yard handoff to the house on the second play of the game, but Haven's Kobe Brish responded on the fourth play of the game, dashing 64 yards to the end zone. Before the half was over, the Raiders would begin to show off the entire skill-set of their offense.Later in the first quarter, starting quarterback Thad Zuber caught a nine-yard pass from Brayden Knoblauch (who also plays receiver and returns kicks) to put Tamaqua up 14-7.Zuber was back at quarterback later in the second quarter. With 9:51 left in the frame, he found sophomore Nate Boyle, who plays just about every position on offense other than quarterback, for a 44-yard strike to make it 21-7. Boyle razzled and dazzled, juking one Haven defender after another, and then effortlessly turned on the jets to the house. He finished with 72 rushing yards and 93 receiving."Both of those guys are great backs," said Tamaqua head coach Sam Bonner of Breiner and Boyle. "It helped us stay balanced. We knew going in that they're a very good 0-2 team, and they were looking for a win. We were very fortunate to hold them off and make some big plays at the end."Just when everything was rolling on all cylinders for the Raiders, Haven's Brandon Kock returned a punt 67 yards for a score before intermission, which made it a 21-14 ballgame. The Hurricanes wouldn't go away after the break.Brish added a 46-yard score in the third, and later a two-yard plunge in the fourth to even up the game at 27-27. The sophomore finished with 227 total yards. But when push came to shove, Tamaqua relied on its senior leadership to take back the lead at 35-27 as Zuber hooked up with Casey Rother for a 12-yard touchdown with just over eight minutes remaining. The score was Zuber's fourth of the game (three passing, one receiving) and Rother's second; capping off massive outings for both playmakers."I said at halftime we had to get Rother more involved in this game," Bonner said. "We thought that we could get some stuff away from our trips. A little bit of play action stuff where I thought he was open in the first half, but we missed him. It's nice to see two of our seniors make big plays for us in a big game."For good measure, Breiner stormed to a 33-yard score with just over four minutes left. At the two-minute mark, Mitchell Kurkek picked off Haven QB Josh Kalyan to slam the door on the 'Canes.BETTER LATE THAN NEVER ... The game didn't start until 7:30 due to a series of power outages.IT'S BEEN A WHILE ... The Raiders are 3-0 for the first time since 2012, when they went 10-0 in the regular season. "We knew this was a big one going in," said Bonner. "It's exciting, but we know each week is going to get harder. We have a lot of good competition coming up. It's one week at a time."C'MON COACH ... In the fourth, Zuber hauled in a clutch catch down the seam on a threaded-needle from Knoblauch on a 2nd-and-21 play that set up a Breiner TD. Zuber finished with 144 yards passing and 36 receiving. "He threw that play in my ear," said Bonner of calling Zuber's number. "Thad knows the game of football and I thought he had a heck of a game for us."
