Tamaqua replaces water main

The Tamaqua Area Water Authority needs to replace a 30-inch water main under North Street in Tamaqua borough, which will mean a water boil advisory for customers in Dutch Hill and the East End. The replacement work will begin at 7 a.m. on Sept. 11.

During the project, the authority will be using a large diameter hose connected to two fire hydrants to provide water to customers in the affected area. This could mean lower water pressure and the possibility that disease containing organisms could find their way into the water. It could also result in discolored water. Discolored water, by itself, doesn't necessarily mean it is unsafe to drink. The affected area includes customers who live/work east of Market Street, from Elm to Willing, and the East End, starting on Columbia Street and going east.To ensure water is safe to drink during an advisory, it should be boiled for at least one full minute, then stored in covered containers, preferably in a refrigerator. Pets should also be provided boiled instead of tap water.Activated charcoal water filter systems will not make the water safe to drink during an advisory. Dishwashers are safe to use only if they have a hot/sani cycle.Tap water may still be used for bathing purposes. For information, call 570-668-0300 or 570-668-3444.
