Schuylkill man jailed for beating woman, stealing

A Schuylkill County man has been jailed on assault and other charges following an incident overnight of Aug. 29-30, from 9 p.m. until 1:53 a.m.

State police at Frackville identified the suspect as Anthony Michael Romano, 23, of 310 Swatara Road, Shenandoah.At 1:53 a.m. on Aug. 30 troopers responded to a woman who was assaulted in the area of Girard Manor Road and Phineyville Road in East Union Township. When they arrived, they saw her bleeding from the head, with wounds around her eyes, to her forehead and to the back of her head. A large amount of dried blood covered her hair and clothing.The investigation revealed the woman was driven to that location by Romano and an unknown woman. According to police, Romano began to assault the victim by punching her in the face several times.The assault continued when the accused struck the victim in the head with a metal object several times. Romano stole money and electronic items, including a Apple iPhone, Apple tablet and Lenovo tablet. The unknown woman assisted in the robbery by holding down the victim while the accused stole the items.The victim wandered on the roadway looking for help. She walked about two hours until she came across a residence at the Phineyville Road. Help was summoned and she was taken to the Lehigh Valley Hospital, Schuylkill East Campus, Pottsville.On Sept. 2, Romano was taken into custody by Shenandoah police on the active warrant. Romano is charged with aggravated and simple assault, robbery, theft, receiving stolen property, unlawful restraint, terroristic threats and reckless endangering another person. He was arraigned before on-call District Judge David J. Rossi, of Tremont, and committed to the county prison in Pottsville after failing to post $50,000 straight cash bail.
