Fire breaks out in local laundromat

A Pocono Summit woman lost most of her wardrobe in a fire on Wednesday afternoon.

At just about 3:30 p.m. Angel Griffith was waiting for laundry to dry at the laundromat in the Aharts Plaza in Blakeslee when she smelled smoke. Griffith went to check on the dryers when she noticed an orange glow in the bottom of the dryer.“I pulled open the door to the dryer and a ball of flames flew out,” Griffith said. “I ran to the back of the laundromat and grabbed the extinguisher and sprayed the dryer, that’s when the smoke starting billowing out and the automatic alarm went off.”“We were responding to the automatic alarm,” said C. J. Dickinson, Tobyhanna Assistant Fire Chief. “Then we received the 911 dispatch from county of a reported fire and we responded accordingly.”Dickinson reported that the fire was knocked down quickly with the assistance of Tunkhannock Volunteer Fire Company and a ladder truck was provided by Lake Harmony Volunteer Fire Company.“The shared attic space allowed the smoke to spread to other businesses,” Dickinson said.It was pretty much business as usual for the rest of the plaza with the exception of the China Pearl Restaurant next store to the laundromat which had fans in the doorways to pull out the smell of the smoke.Griffith added that she shouldn’t have waited so long to do her laundry since most of her clothes were destroyed in the fire.

Fire crews from Tobyhanna, Tunkhannock and Lake Harmony responded to a fire in a clothing dryer at a Blakeslee laundromat on Wednesday afternoon
Because the businesses in the shopping plaza have a shared attic fans were needed to remove the smell of smoke from those closest to the laundromat
