Tamaqua gains wins in boys and girls soccer

The Tamaqua boys and girls soccer teams both earned wins on Saturday.

In other scholastic action, Palmerton and Jim Thorpe also earned victories in girls soccer, while Panther Valley posted a win in volleyball.BOYS SOCCERLehighton-CatasauquaCatasauqua erupted in the second half to turn a 1-0 halftime lead into 4-1 non-league victory over Lehighton.Damian DiPaolo led the Rough Riders with two goals in the contest, while teammates Joe Merkel and Devon Troxell both added scores.Logan Lucas scored off a feed from Patrick Lawler to prevent a shutout for the Tribe.Catty held a 15-5 edge in shots on goal and saw goalkeeper Gabe Atiyeh stop four shots in the winning effort.For Lehighton (0-1), Greg Venuto stopped 11 shots in net.Jim Thorpe-Pen ArgylPen Argyl scored twice in the first half of its non-league outing against Jim Thorpe in a 2-0 win.Lucus Maggipinto and Stivan Kumbarov scored goals for the Green Knights, and Jacob Slaughter and Ryan McGirr added assists for the winners.Matt Rodas stopped eight shots for the shutout, while Olympian counterpart Kingsley Ehling stopped seven shots.Tamaqua-MinersvilleTamaqua lit up the scoreboard early and often, as it built a 5-0 lead at halftime, before defeating Minersville, 6-0.Derian Stianche led the Blue Raiders with two goals and two assists, while Brian Milot added two goals and an assist. Nathaniel Noftz scored a goal and assisted on another. Ian Davis scored a goal and Jacob Rudy assisted once in the win.Tamaqua held a 14-7 shot advantage in the outing, with Mason Dolinsky earning the shutout in net, as the Raiders' goalkeeper stopped four shots.GIRLS SOCCERTamaqua-Wyoming SeminaryIn their first game of the season, Tamaqua and Wyoming Seminary tangled through regulation and two overtime sessions, before settling with a 2-2 deadlock.Seminary got on the board first, before Lady Raiders' freshman Sophia Boyle knotted it up at one-apiece off an assist from Emma Kuczynski to go into halftime tied.Kuczynski then put the locals ahead with a goal early on in the second half on a penalty kick, before the hosts tied it with just over 33 minutes remaining in regulation.For the game, Tamaqua outshot their opponents, 33-16, and goalie Flo Rios stopped 12 for the Lady Raiders to prevent a loss.Northern Lehigh-PalmertonPalmerton secured a 9-2 victory over Northern Lehigh in this Colonial League clash.Jenna Blynn led the winners with a hat trick in the contest, while Natalie Matsko and Mia Fantasia both added scores for the Lady Blue Bombers, who outshot the Bulldogs 20-9. Four other goals were scored, but not reported at press time.Jill Olewine scored both goals for Northern Lehigh.Schuylkill Haven-Jim ThorpeFreshman Lydia Wallace made her high school soccer debut in fine fashion, as she assisted on one goal and added the game-winner for the Lady Olympians in their 2-1 win over Schuylkill Haven.Brielle Long notched the winners' first goal in the first half, as the teams were knotted at one-apiece at intermission. Wallace's game-winner came with 17:30 remaining to help her squad to the win.Monae Bullock had five stops in goal for the winners, while her counterpart, Desiree Rossi Sacco, had 14 for Haven.Pen Argyl-LehightonPen Argyl showed its mettle, taking a 3-0 shutout win over non-league opponent Lehighton.Brooke Labarre, Delaney Porter, and Abby Wallbillich all tallied goals for the Lady Green Knights in the victory, in which their team outshot the Lady Indians, 17-5.Katya Hoover cleaned up in goal for the winners, preventing any scores, while stopping five.CROSS COUNTRYNorthampton InvitationalMarian's Tina Capparell took second place in the girls race of the annual Northampton Invitational.Capparell finished in 18:20.55, crossing the line behind only Rebecca Snyder of Oley Valley. There were a total of 142 runners in the race.Nicole Capparell also turned in a solid showing, taking 32nd in 20:28.92.The Lehighton and Tamaqua teams also participated in the competition, with the Blue Raiders finishing ninth in the team standings and the Indians taking 12th.Tamaqua's Sarah Maue was 18th in a time of 20:04.71, while teammate Kailee Carroll took 43rd in 20:45.88. Francis Kabana was 56th in 21:27.24.In the boys race, Tamaqua's Brad Clemson finished in 36th place in a time of 17:01.88. The next best local finish came from Lehighton's Anthony Tavella, who was 102nd with a time of 18:35.06. There were a total of 190 runners and 27 teams in the boys race.VOLLEYBALLPanther Valley-WeatherlyPanther Valley cruised to a victory over Weatherly.Emilee Kwaak had nine kills, five digs, four service points and two aces to help the Panthers register a 25-12, 25-19, 25-7 win.Sydney Clouser contributed 13 digs, while Jenna Dubosky added three kills, 14 assists, 14 service points and four aces.PV also received five kills, two blocks, 12 service points and three aces from Erika Dubosky.In the JV match, Panther Valley gained a 25-4, 25-3 win.MIDDLE SCHOOL FOOTBALLTamaqua-Mahanoy AreaJoey Coleman scored four touchdowns and Tamaqua rolled to a 34-0 win over Mahanoy Area.Coleman rushed for 178 yards on just six carries for the Blue Raiders (2-0). Warren Stewart added 60 rushing yards and a score on seven carries.Tamaqua's next game is Sept. 11 at Northwestern Lehigh.
