Rednecks welcome here at Weissport fest

With all due respect to Jeff Foxworthy:

You might be a Redneck ... if you attended the Weissport Redneck Festival this past weekend. This was the 10th year for the festival, held in Weissport's Borough Park and for the first time it was held in the rain.Despite two days of precipitation, including downpours on Saturday, the festival had good attendance and the events went on as schedule.Apparently rednecks don't mind rain as they held such events as the Daisy Duke contest, Mr. Redneck Competition, Best Beard contest and watermelon eating event as the precipitation fell."Saturday we had a heck of a rain," said Duane Dellecker, festival chairman. "Any other festival, the weather would have killed it. We had a heck of a crowd and we had all the contests."He said, "For 10 years we didn't have a drop of rain so I guess we were due."The festival is under the auspices of the Weissport Recreation Commission. Dellecker said proceeds benefit recreation in Weissport. The festival is a tribute to the storied redneck lifestyle.Upon entering Weissport, a wash line is draped with worn, various colored T-shirts that proclaim "Redneck Festival."At the festival itself, there are many humorous props including a bicycle with a push mower on the front (redneck lawn mower) and a doll duct taped to a tree (redneck baby sitter). Events besides included toilet bowl races, milking a wooden cow, big wheel races and redneck bean bag.The toilet bowl race consists of a store push cart equipped with an outhouse commode, with two-member teams. Prizes were pails of bathroom supplies, including a plunger and toilet tissue.Brenda Leiby, a member of borough council, said people who attend seem to enjoy the festival. She said, "I think it's a shame it rained to put a damper on things, but there were a lot of people weathering the storm."Dellecker said even in the rain, attendees had a good time with many wearing hoodies to keep themselves dry.Chief of Police Denna Krammes said the festival was held without incident. She said, "I think it's been great. Other than the weather being a downer, it's been a great turnout and a good event."She said there were rumors that there might be protests, "but there were no protesters and no problems."Krammes said two officers were on duty during the festival and the committee hired its own security. The festival had some children's rides, vendors, service organizations and several different bands.Winners of various competitions were:• Watermelon Eating - 1.
