Marks 'Unstoppable' in Lehighton win
Lauren Marks is a fan of the country music band Rascal Flatts, who had a No. 1 hit called "Unstoppable, an inspirational tune which appears on the 2010 Olympics soundtrack.
The song also describes how Marks excels in field hockey.Friday night, Marks saw her band in concert at the Allentown Fair.Saturday morning, she was totally "Unstoppable" as she led Lehighton to a 2-1 win over visiting Pleasant Valley. The petite but dynamic blonde took eight shots on goal in the second half against the Bears and scored both of Lehighton's points on unassisted plays. In the first half she was held in check only because new head coach Corrine McConville had her playing in the middle. Marks was switched to forward in the second half and the move unleashed her."I love being a forward," said Marks, a senior who last season scored 22 goals and was named the Times News Field Hockey Player of the Year.Coach McConville, who was a member of the 2009 state championship field hockey team for Lehighton, admits she is still testing the waters by having the players try different positions. Of Marks, McConville said, "I put her in the middle in the first half to feel her out.""In the first half I played defense," said Marks. "We put more experienced players in the front row."We have a strong team as a whole which is capable of good ball control."Pleasant Valley came out of the corral strong at the start of the game, taking a 1-0 lead within the first five minutes on a slant shot by Julia Butchkoski. Meara Hanyon got an assist on the play. After that, the Indians proved dominant on both offense and defense.Although the score was only a one-goal difference, the statistics show that the game was much more unbalanced. The second half especially belonged to Lehighton, with the Bears getting just two shots on goal. Over 22 minutes passed after the break before PV was able to make its first shot, a blast up close by Jess Schneider after a corner play.By then, Lehighton already had its lead.Marks got her first goal at the 18:15 mark when teammate Maura Phelan intercepted deep in Bear territory, and passed it to Marks, who eventually was able to get a straight-on shot from about 15 yards out. Phelan is one of the returnees with Marks from an Indians team that went to the state playoffs a year ago.Four-and-a-half minutes later, Olivia Frendt intercepted the ball, which eventually led to Marks surgically slicing the ball into the net from the right side.Of Phelan, McConville said, "She's an animal."The coach said she wasn't too concerned when her team was down 1-0 at the half because, "We're a heavy second-half team because our basics are strong."Pleasant Valley coach Kim Waldenmayer said one factor to consider in her team's loss is, "We have a lot of injuries. Injuries are killing us."She also said that one of the key problems so far is that the girls quickly lose confidence."They just get down on themselves," she said. "They started off good, passing and such."We will try to focus at practice passing as a unit, and mental toughness."A GOOD START ... Lehighton opened its season with a 2-0 record, while Pleasant Valley is 0-2. Lehighton's next contest is tonight at Brandywine.CAN'T WIN A LEAGUE TITLE ... Since the Indians joined the Schuylkill League in other sports a year ago, the field hockey team is independent, meaning it can't win a league championship.
