Lehigh man eluded police, charged with thefts

A Lehigh County man has been charged with several thefts from the Walmart store in Mahoning Township earlier this year.

Township police said Luis Melendez-Perez, 32, of Allentown, was located by a bail bondsman on Tuesday, and placed in Northampton County Prison.On May 29, Walmart Loss Prevention reported three retail thefts of infant formula, and other merchandise.At 2:22 p.m. that day, officers attempted to take Melendez-Perez into custody at Walmart, but Melendez-Perez fled into a wooded area alongside the store and eluded capture.At the time, Melendez-Perez had an active warrant for his arrest from PA State Parole.He has been charged with escape, and flight to avoid apprehension trial or punishment.A warrant was issued for his arrest, and served Thursday.At 10:14 p.m. May 18, there was $474 worth of merchandise stolen; at 9:35 a.m. May 20, $379 of merchandise stolen; and at 8:37 p.m. May 25, $949 of merchandise stolen.For the three thefts, Melendez-Perez was charged with retail theft and criminal conspiracy-retail theft; and driving while operating privilege is suspended or revoked.He failed to appear for his scheduled preliminary hearings on July 12.
