Route 248 closed due to crash and spill

A portion of Route 248 was closed after a spill from a crash Wednesday morning in Lehigh Township.

Township Fire Chief Rich Hildebrand said the fire department was dispatched at 8:41 a.m. to a spill on the highway at the traffic light at routes 248 and 873.Hildebrand said a trailer crashed, rolled over and leaked what appeared to be an unidentified oily substance, possibly TAC oil or driveway sealer, all over the westbound lanes of routes 248 and 873, extending one-quarter to one-half a mile. The trailer was abandoned just before the Carbon County line, he said.No injuries resulted from the incident, Hildebrand said.He said Walnutport Fire Police were called to assist with traffic control, while the Aquashicola Fire Company assisted by the abandoned trailer on 248 westbound."We started covering up as much of the spill on this end that we could because it was slippery and it's also sticky and getting (onto) cars very bad," Hildebrand said.Hildebrand said Pennsylvania Department of Transportation sand trucks arrived on scene to keep the spill from spreading, collect the substance, and try to remove it.He said construction was taking place on top of the 873 bridge, which was down to one lane, and prompted traffic to be rerouted to Route 145.Contacted this morning, Lehigh Township Police Sgt. John Henry said the identity of the owner of the trailer is known, but he wouldn't release the name as of press time. However, Henry said at least a dozen vehicle owners have contacted the police department with complaints about the asphalt sealant that's all over their vehicles after many of them attempted to get it off, but couldn't.
