Bath man in jail after high-speed police chase
A Northampton County man is in jail after leading police on a high-speed chase.
Joseph Everett, 59, faces charges of fleeing, DUI, prohibited offensive weapons, recklessly endangering, driving under suspension, and numerous traffic violations.According to an affidavit of probable cause filed by patrolman Timothy Kromer of the Palmerton Police Department:At 1:18 p.m. Feb. 22, Kromer, along with patrolman Adam Shimer, were following up on a report of a possible stolen vehicle in the area of the Rusty Nail at 939 Mauch Chunk Road.A silver Volvo SUV was observed in the parking lot. When the driver spotted police, the vehicle quickly backed up and began traveling east on Mauch Chunk Road at a high rate of speed.Kromer was traveling west on Delaware Avenue approaching Mauch Chunk Road, and took up a position at the intersection of Mauch Chunk Road and Franklin Avenue, when he saw the vehicle approach the intersection and fail to come to a complete stop at the posted stop sign.Kromer pulled out behind the vehicle, which failed to come to a complete stop at the red traffic light at the intersection of Mauch Chunk Road and Delaware Avenue.He continued to follow the vehicle onto Route 248 east. Kromer clocked the vehicle going 81 miles per hour in a posted 55-mph zone.The vehicle slowed for the red traffic signal at the intersection of 248 and Route 873. Kromer activated his emergency lights, and the vehicle accelerated through, traveling on 248 east.Everett continued and came to a stop in the yard of the residence.Both Kromer and Shimer got out of their cars, and saw Everett pulling a woman over the center console. Both Everett and the woman got out of the driver's side front door. The woman was identified as Valerie Schlata, also of Bath.During a search, Kromer saw a spiked ball, which was attached to a chain with a handle, lying on the ground next to the vehicle.Schlata told police Everett had possession of the weapon while operating the vehicle.Everett was agitated, displayed pinpoint pupils, and was constantly swaying and continuing physical movement.Both Everett and Schlata were taken to the borough police station, where Everett admitted to having "a little taste" of methamphetamine.Kromer asked whether Everett was on probation, and he said that he is on state parole. Kromer contacted state parole and was told that Everett is on active supervision. Everett's driving privileges are suspended because of a DUI.Everett was scheduled to have a preliminary hearing Wednesday before District Judge William Kissner of Palmerton.He is incarcerated under $20,000 straight bail.
