Two Nesquehoning men were charged by borough police after they were called to a residence on July 5 for what was described as a traumatic injury incident involving fireworks.
Officer Richard Neikam arrested Ian P. Diefenderfer, 24, and Christopher R. Gillow, 31, both of the 500 block of East Center Street.Gillow was injured in the incident, having been hit in the face by one of the explosives, police said. He was released after having been treated in the emergency room of the St. Luke’s University Hospital-Miners Campus in Coaldale.Diefenderfer is charged with causing or risking a catastrophe, recklessly endangering another person, disorderly conduct/creating a hazardous or physically offensive condition and disorderly conduct.Gillow faces charges of criminal conspiracy, disorderly conduct/creating a hazardous or physically offensive condition and disorderly conduct.In a criminal complaint, Neikam said he responded to the scene and found Gillow sitting in front of the residence and bleeding from what appeared to be a laceration of the forehead. The victim was treated by Nesquehoning Ambulance and Lehighton ALS responders and transported to the hospital.The officer said Diefenderfer and Gillow both told him they were lighting fireworks, one of which apparently malfunctioned and struck Gillow in the head. The fireworks were described as “Roman candles” and a “mortar-type” artillery.Both Diefenderfer and Gillow said the latter type of firework misfired and went only a few feet before exploding in front of Gillow, resulting in its debris striking him in the face.
