Nesquehoning to buy new Christmas lights

Nesquehoning residents may see some new snowflakes adorning utility poles along Catawissa Street this Christmas.

That's because the Christmas Lights Committee is hard at work making sure it will be able to purchase at least a portion of the new LED lights to replace the borough's existing Christmas lights. On Wednesday, Suzanne Smith, who spearheaded the formation of the committee, reported to borough council that the committee met with Rick Snyder of Rileigh's Outdoor Decor of Bethlehem regarding the purchase of new light decorations on Tuesday, but was discouraged to learn that the cost of the lights would be nearly double what the committee was expecting.Snyder told the committee that the snowflakes and wreaths the members chose would cost approximately $430 apiece if they were ordered by the end of August to guarantee delivery in time for the holiday season. But a little research and a few phone calls to vendors nationwide made the difference and put the project back on track, she said, noting that she found a vendor who could get the same type of design the committee wants at a lower cost than the local vendor could provide.Smith didn't announce how much of a savings each light could be, but said she was happy about the new quote. The committee hopes to be able to purchase over 30 new lights for the borough in this ongoing project. The lights would adorn utility poles along Catawissa Street, as well as the New Columbus hill between the Thanksgiving holiday and Russian Christmas on Jan. 7.To date, she said, the committee has collected $4,031 from businesses and borough residents and has another pledge of $1,000 that is on its way."In 28 days we managed to raise $4,000 and have another pledge coming in," Smith said. "That's a great stand on trying to raise the money."Borough council then voted to give the committee $2,500 for the cause, with the budget committee also looking to see if any additional funds could be put in next month to offset the costs that cannot be raised by the Christmas Lights committee through various fundraisers and a raffle currently taking place."We're thinking for the future," she said. "Any donation is appreciated, even if you can't afford to cover a whole light."Money is still being accepted for the ongoing project and can be dropped off at the borough hall at 114 W. Catawissa St. Checks can be made payable to Nesquehoning Borough with "Christmas Lights" in the memo.Tickets for the raffle are also still being sold at the borough hall and can be purchased there as well. The next Christmas Lights committee meeting will take place at 2 p.m. on Monday in the borough hall.

Nesquehoning's Christmas Lights committee is looking at purchasing snowflakes, much like the design on the left, as well as wreaths through an ongoing initiative to update the borough's Christmas decorations. AMY MILLER/TIMES NEWS
