Carbon rents van for dog shelter

When Weatherly Mayor Tom Connor's animal transport van finally bit the dust, he used a pickup, and then resorted to using his own vehicle to ferry rescued dogs to and from the Carbon County Animal Shelter in Nesquehoning.

A new van has been purchased, but it will be awhile before it arrives."It hasn't even started being built yet, from what we understand," Commissioners' Chairman Wayne E. Nothstein said.In the meantime, Connors, who is director of the shelter, needs wheels.Carbon County commissioners on Thursday agreed to rent a utility van for $300 a week for four to six weeks from Jim Thorpe Auto Rentals."They were using a Dodge pickup truck that we had here from the county, and it was extremely dangerous," said Commissioner Thomas J. Gerhard."Tom (Connors) was actually loading dogs on the front seat with him and transporting them, and that wasn't good. And he was using his personal vehicle, so we decided to rent the van."Other businessIn other matters, commissioners:• Approved a $554 one-year maintenance renewal contract with Sirius Computer Solutions for the InfoPrint 1832 printer in the Tax Claim Office;• Approved a grant-in-aid application/agreement with the Juvenile Court Judges' Commission of the office of General Counsel for salary reimbursement for the Juvenile Court Office from July 1 through June 30, 2018. The estimated revenue is $69,300;• Approved a change order for a contract with The Service Team, Lehighton, for the Home rehabilitation Program. The change decreases the amount by $18,945, changing the price from $30,875 to $11,930.
