Weissport chief: Increased security for Redneck Festival

The 10th annual Redneck Festival in Weissport Park will be held on Sept. 1-3 and the borough's chief of police says there will be "heightened security."

Police Chief Denna Krammes told borough council on Monday, "In light of recent events around the nation, we have heightened security in place for the event. We will not tolerate any racial discrimination or indifference. We intend to make this festival a family fun weekend for all."The festival includes "redneck" games, contests, food vendors and live entertainment. The festival is sponsored by the Weissport Recreation Commission with proceeds benefiting the community. The council said it received a security agreement letter from the festival committee which requests that the borough provide security for the event. One business owner had two nonsecurity concerns related to the festival.Jay Frey, owner of Chantilly Goods, an ice cream parlor at Bridge and White Street, said he feels repairs should be made to North White Street, which runs past his store. The street is riddled with "big potholes" and needs repairs. He said the street is used for festival parking. The council didn't respond if the repairs could be made in time for the festival.Frey also asked for a 30-minute parking sign in front of his store. He said during the festival, festival attendees will deprive customers from convenient parking. In other business• Frey said he purchased a building next to Chantilly Goods and that another business will soon be coming into the borough.• A zoning variance was given for the Weissport House Hotel to be converted into apartments, but Frey feels the borough should make sure the conversion is done properly. He would like to see the borough require facilities for lounging and parking required. The Weissport House was the last barroom in Weissport and has been closed.• The council said it is hoping to have a new burning ordinance in effect within the next few months. It presented some adjustments of a sample ordinance to its solicitor, attorney Gregory Mousseau.Councilman Arland Moyer said the new ordinance will prohibit all open burning except in certain types of pits.Presently, burning is permitted in barrels with screens every first and third Saturday.Council President Gene Kershner said he doesn't see a need for burning trash since the "sanitation collection we have is good."The sample ordinance says pit fires must be 100 feet from structures, but Moyer said he feels 50 feet or less would be adequate. The ordinance also would require anyone having pit fire to have containment measures such as water next to it.Violations to the ordinance would result in fines from $50 to $1,000.• Kershner is concerned about an electric line placed across Prospect Street from a house to a shed. He feels the line is a danger, especially when it rains. The matter will be turned over to the borough's code enforcement officer.• The council was informed that Bridge Street stormwater upgrades will cost about $91,000. It has applied for a Community Development Block Grant to assist with the project. If the grant is approved, the borough would receive $78,430 toward the project while having to provide $11,900.
