Raising The House helps with back to school

With summer winding down and school right on the horizon, it's time for students to get prepped for the big first day.

And if you happen to be a part of the St. John's Episcopal Church Breakfast Bunch, Raising the House has got you covered for supplies."We are donating backpacks filled with school supplies to the kids in the Breakfast Bunch program as a community service," Adrianne Allen, president of Raising The House, said at the church on Friday morning. "That's what our organization is about, giving back to the community."The group was established in honor of Towamensing teacher Blaine House, who passed away in 2013."It's our mission at Raising The House to continue his legacy, to help students in the Palmerton Area School District, and this is one of the ways we can continue Blaine's legacy, and continue helping students with getting them ready for the first day of school," Tamara House said.Initially, Raising The House focused on acquiring playground equipment for Towamensing Elementary, but they quickly expanded to offer scholarships, and then even more."The outpouring of support from the community was so great, we thought we could have a bigger purpose," Allen said. "So, then it changed from scholarships to what could we do for families in Palmerton, because that's what Blaine would have wanted."Raising The House acquired the supplies with funds derived from their annual 5K, along with several smaller events throughout the year. The kids of the Breakfast Brunch program were thrilled as volunteers doled out backpacks after their morning meal and game time."My backpack is blue," Christian Estiella, 6, said as he showed it off. "In the backpack there was notebooks, pencils, a pencil box and glue sticks.""I already had one, but at least I have another one for next year, or if my old one runs out or I lose it. I needed folders for certain things like math for next year, so that's good," Matthew Raub, 12, said. The backpack project helps children in Palmerton Area School District with some basic supplies for the upcoming year, which may seem incidental to some people, but can mean a lot to students, parents and teachers."I'm happy to be helping out with people for school. I'm a teacher, and when kids come in unprepared, it can be a distraction. This is one less thing their families have to worry about, and the kids can just come in and focus on being successful at school," sixth-grade Towamensing teacher Bill Zeky said.
