Nesquehoning gets good audit report

Nesquehoning is in good shape its audit report revealed.

On Wednesday, Nesquehoning Borough Council welcomed Dale Kirk of Kirk Summa and Company LLP to its monthly workshop meeting. Kirk outlined the most recent audit of funds in the borough. He said that the borough is in good shape overall, adding that he didn't see "any real issues."Kirk said that at the end of the year, Nesquehoning had almost $2 million in cash and $500,000 in CDs for contingencies, which showed that the borough was adequately funded. Its capital assets, which includes buildings and everything the borough owns totaled $8.5 million, while the liabilities were $313,000, including $37,000 in bills that needed to be paid.Kirk put that into perspective, saying that the state of Illinois has $15 billion in bills to pay so the $37,000 outstanding balance is nothing to worry about. He added that Nesquehoning has no pension liability because it is a well-funded pension, something not often seen anymore. He commended the board and borough secretary RoniSue Ahner for keeping a close eye on the books and spending for the year.Burn ordinanceCouncil also spoke about its burn ordinance and is investigating what changes should be made after the borough received complaints about the ordinance. The challenge with the ordinance is that Nesquehoning has both in-town properties, which wouldn't meet some requirements outlined because of lot sizes, while also having forested properties in the outlying areas such as the Lake Hauto development and estates.John McArdle, borough emergency management coordinator and Nesquehoning Hose Company fire chief, outlined some of the issues and challenges and handed out suggestions he feels may work.He also suggested keeping the ordinance in place until the end of the year before making any changes. This will allow the borough time to properly investigate what may be a good compromise that will fit everyone, no matter their location within the borough limits. The borough will continue to work on the ordinance in the coming months.Other business• Councilman Frank Jacobs reported that roadwork on Tippets Road will begin on Monday.• Council discussed its options for propane regarding a generator at the New Columbus Fire Company that was replaced after a power surge.
