Kidder Twp. police benefit from golf tournament

OnJuly 27 the Kidder Township police department held a golf tournament to benefit the department. Nineteen foursomes teed off amid the threat of rain at the Jack Frost National Golf Club in the township.

"We are really hoping to make this an annual event," Chief Matt Kuzma said. "This year, the funds will go to new Tasers and vests. Next year, we may team up to also help a local charity."The teams started off the event at noon with a picnic lunch served at the pavilion, which was followed by 18 holes of golf and a dinner. The event was sponsored by the southern rock duo Florida Georgia Line. The band made a "generous" donation, which paid for teams from Marian, Jim Thorpe and Weatherly Area high schools to take part."Years ago one of our officers, A.J. Bott, had assisted Florida Georgia Line to get to a promo concert at Jack Frost when they were stranded at Split Rock," Kuzma said. "And earlier this year, we took our wives to see the band at the PPL Center and we all got a meet-and-greet with the guys, so when I was sending out requests for sponsors I said, 'What the heck?' and I sent a request to their manager."Kuzma had explained that the department wanted to get some of the kids from the area more involved with the department and he thought that the tournament would be a good opportunity. The band's manager wrote back that the guys would be happy to help out and sent the department a check for $20,000 and a case of samples of the band's signature whiskey, Old Camp.Other sponsors included: Tournament sponsor at $7,500, PennEast Pipeline; and Driving Range sponsor at $750, Papillion and Moyer. Hole sponsors were Harmony Beverage, Pocono Raceway, Boulder View Tavern, JT 1 Electric and Pocono Area Abstract Co.

Fran Wilkinson and Mary Farnschlader came out for a round of golf in support of the Kidder Township Police Department. "We love to support our local police," Farnschlader said.
