Weatherly discusses skate park upgrades

BMX biking and skateboarding are popular in Weatherly, and officials want to create a home for the sports in Eurana park.

During a recent council meeting, mayor Tom Connors asked for council's support to add something for riders at the park."Council has to seriously consider putting some money into that little area we give them for the skate park. We haven't put any money in it for years, and if you look at the whole park, that's the one section I'm not proud of," Connors said. The conversation arose because the borough has decided to post rules regarding the skating area."The reason for the sign is there have been a lot of conversations in regard to our liability there," borough Manager Harold Pudliner said.Because of the lack of equipment like jumps and rails, some riders have been bringing their own to the park. The borough's insurance policy doesn't cover those devices though, so they will be banned."If you make something, and someone gets hurt, we're not covered," Connors said. "And some people have made some pretty nice stuff."Connors said that it's possible that the borough could approve a piece of homemade equipment, but they didn't specify how that would work. One idea that is on the table is adding a dirt track near the skating area. Council members have discussed the idea."I think it would be something that wouldn't be super costly, and I don't think there would be a lot of danger involved. That will be a good start," Councilman Joseph Cyburt said.Pudliner said that the borough once had a dirt track area where kids could ride their bikes, but they lost access to the property."We took the backhoe up there," he said. "The kids made their own mounds and jumped all over the place up there."Connors said the park has been saving money through the clothing donation that helps pay for the borough's recycling program. Fifty percent of the proceeds go to cover the cost of recycling, and the rest goes back into the park. He said that the skate park area would be a great place to spend the money."There's 20-30 kids on bikes out there. One time they all went down to TJs, it looked like a motorcycle gang without the motorcycles. They're good kids and they deserve better up there," he said.
