Tamaqua falls in extra innings

RICHBORO - It's hard to beat a team twice. It's even more difficult to do it in the postseason.

Tamaqua battered Lehigh in an opening-round game of the Section 6 9-11-year-old Little League Tournament last Thursday, posting a 15-5 victory in four innings.Lehigh was ready for the rematch.Jack Evans' sacrifice fly in the bottom of the seventh inning scored Zander Lynn and lifted Lehigh to a 10-9 victory over Tamaqua Sunday at William B. Curry Memorial Field.Lehigh's win denied Tamaqua a chance to clinch the sectional title, and forced another game between the two teams Monday at 7 p.m. in the double-elimination tournament."Revenge games are always the tough ones," Tamaqua head coach Trevor Steigerwalt said afterward. "You know they're going to come back with vengeance."We've had opportunities. We didn't' cash in on the opportunities like we did the other night. We didn't cash in on the opportunities like we did in the other games."Lehigh certainly made the most of its chances. After watching an early 5-1 lead devolve into a 9-5 deficit heading into the bottom of the sixth inning, Lehigh rallied. Four runs in the bottom of the sixth tied it to force the extra frame.Back-to-back walks to open the bottom of the seventh put runners on first and second before Lynn, running for Trey Ondria, moved to third on a wild pitch.Evans didn't waste any time bringing him in, lifting a ball into the outfield that allowed Lynn to race home for the winning run."It means a lot," said Lehigh head coach Mike Ondria. "We don't have any superstars on this team. They are all just hard-working ballplayers. Each one contributes each little piece, and it showed today."Offense wasn't hard to come by for either side Sunday.Lehigh built a 5-1 lead after the second inning, and looked like it might take control of the contest early. But Tamaqua, a team that has scored 28 runs in the first two games of the tournament, clawed back with three runs in the top of the third inning to make it a one-run game before taking a 6-5 lead in the top of the fourth. Cian McLaughlin's RBI single scored Mason Ligenza to tie it, and a hard-liner to leftfield off the bat of Luke Kane dropped that allowed Brian Hinkle to score and put Tamaqua ahead.Tamaqua's lead grew in the top of the sixth. McLaughlin, Zander Coleman and Kane walked to load the bases, before a wild pitch allowed McLaughlin to score from third to make it 7-5. Blaise Gigli brought in Coleman and Kane with a two-run double to make it 9-5."We came back strong," said Steigerwalt. "We were down early, and they fought back. We got a comfortable lead ... we may have gotten a little too comfortable."Lehigh's rally in the bottom half of the inning started when Evans beat out an infield hit. Nick Zumas followed and reached on an error, and Luke Appleman loaded the bases with a single.Bryant Sedlock delivered a two-run double to make it 9-7, and Paul Erfle made it a one-run game with a sacrifice fly that plated Appleman. Jacob Rivera's single to left field scored Sedlock to tie the game with two outs.Noah Mateyak and Ligenza opened the top of the seventh for Tamaqua with back-to-back singles. But Zumas retired the next three hitters in order to work out of trouble."It was a roller coaster this time," said Steigerwalt. "I like the way we fought back. We showed a lot of fight."There at the end of the game, we just didn't get that big hit where we needed it. We gave them a couple soft outs. We put ourselves in a bad situation with some walks. But we're right here, and it's right where we want to be."HOW THEY GOT HERE … After dispatching Lehigh in its opener, Tamaqua posted a 13-7 win over Lenape Valley Friday night. Lehigh bounced back from its opening round with a 19-8 win over Stroudsburg on Friday, before eliminating Lenape Valley with a 16-7 victory on Saturday.R-E-L-A-X … Though disappointed, Steigerwalt quickly put the setback in perspective. "They're resilient. Five minutes from now, we're going to go for ice cream, and we're going to realize this was just a game. There's no need to dwell on it. The world's not going to stop. We're going to have fun tomorrow, and we're going to see where we're at," he said.Tamaqua 103 203 0 - 9 9 2Lehigh 320 004 1 - 10 13 2Coleman, McLaughlin (6), Steigerwalt (7) and Kane; Jacob Rivera, Appleman (4), Zumas (6) and Evans, Erfle (4), Evans (7).
