Local man graduates from West Point

Cadet Richard Smith Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. Richard D. Smith Sr. of Nesquehoning, graduated from the U.S. Military Academy on Saturday, May 27.

Smith graduated from Panther Valley High School in 2013.While at West Point, he concentrated his studies in information technology, earning the highest GPA of the graduating class in the IT department. He was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army within the infantry branch. He also held the rank of first sergeant within the corps of cadets and achieved dean's list.Following his graduation, Smith was married to Emma Spell of Delaware who also graduated from West Point. They were married June 10.He was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the Army within the Infantry branch and will report to Fort Bliss in El Paso, Texas, for his first assignment.
