Allentown Band to perform free concert

The Allentown Band, America's oldest civilian band, will perform a free open-air concert at historic Haines Mill in Cetronia on July 16. The concert, hosted by the Lehigh County Historical Society, starts at 6:30 p.m. in the public park surrounding Haines Mill. The mill will be open free from 1 to 6 p.m. so that visitors can tour it before the concert.

The Allentown Band has a rich history of performing for visiting dignitaries and dedications. The band has played for 10 presidents, including Abraham Lincoln, Theodore Roosevelt and Jimmy Carter. It has also been the subject of a segment on the CBS News Sunday Morning television show and WLVT-TV's documentary titled, "The Allentown Band, 175 Years of Musical Memories."The band will perform a variety of favorite and well-loved selections. Concert attendees should bring their own lawn chair or blanket.The tours and concert are sponsored in part by a grant from Lehigh County.The mill is located at Haines Mill and Dorney Park roads. From Route 22, turn left onto Cedar Crest Boulevard in Allentown, followed by a right onto Broadway, and a left onto Haines Mill Road. Haines Mill is on the left.The Lehigh County Historical Society provides free tours at the mill from 1 to 4 p.m. on weekends, May through September.For more information, visit
