Carbon Monarchs edged by Coplay
Timely hitting paired with solid pitching has long been a recipe for success in the game of baseball.
On Tuesday night, Coplay was able to achieve both, defeating the Carbon Monarchs 2-1 for a Lehigh Valley Legion victory. The Monarchs actually got off to a good start, scoring their lone run in the first inning. Derek Joyce led off the frame with a triple and Darren Goida was able to bring him home. However, Coplay pitcher Alex Bruneio settled in and kept the Monarchs off balance the rest of the way. After surrendering the run in the first, Bruneio gave up just two more hits and struck out seven."Arguably, Bruneio is the best pitcher in the league and in my eyes he's a Division 1 pitcher and he showed that today," said Carbon manager Donnie Rehrig. "But that's kind of been the story of our year, we can't come through with that big hit with two outs. We had a leadoff double in the sixth and just couldn't get him around. It's really just something we're struggling with, getting that big hit."Obviously both teams didn't light up the stat column, but Coplay came through with hits when opportunities were presented.Coplay matched the Monarchs in the first when Matthew Dobeck led off the inning with a single. Bruneio then singled in the next at-bat to bring in Dobeck.Coplay then took the lead in the second when Robert Lamm walked to start the inning. After Carbon pitcher Collin Haupt retired two in a row, Ben Antonchak came through with the timely hit for Coplay, knocking in Lamm with a single."Our boys always come to play at the plate and they just have a knack for coming through with important hits at critical times in the game," said Coplay manager Jim Murphy. "We've been playing a lot of games in a short amount of time, a lot of doubleheaders. Our kids are definitely a little tired, but they battled today and we were able to come away with the win."With the victory, Coplay is now 10-2-1 and once again in the Lehigh Valley Legion division championship hunt after winning the division last season. With the loss, the Monarchs fell to 4-10-1 on the season.COPLAY LEADERS ...
