A Carbon County man was sentenced to a state prison term, which he requested, for resisting arrest and a drug charge after entering guilty pleas on Thursday.
Steven Michael Mika, 31, of Weissport, was sentenced by President Judge Roger N. Nanovic II to serve 11 to 24 months in a state correctional institution on the resisting charge and one year probation, consecutive, on a charge of possession of drug paraphernalia. Before the sentence was imposed, Mika told Nanovic he wanted to go to a state prison because of a severe drug addiction problem he said he has been battling for the last 10 years. He told the court, "I think the state has better programs for my addiction." Mika said the county prison has limited programs for those seeking help for drug addiction.Mika was arrested on March 25 by state police at Lehighton who conducted a traffic stop along Canal Street near Route 209 in Franklin Township. Mika was a passenger in the vehicle. He jumped out of the vehicle and fled on foot but was eventually caught. It took substantial force to take him into custody, it was noted.Mika, an inmate in the county prison, recently admitted to a probation violation on another drug count, and agreed to serve 10 months for the violation. Nanovic ruled that his sentence and the probation term run concurrent.Mika was also ordered to get a drug and alcohol evaluation, zero tolerance for drug and alcohol use and pay court costs of about $1,000.He was given credit for 54 days spent in jail on the charge.
